About Strathcona Montessori Preschool

In British Columbia, children may start preschool if they turn three by December 31st of that year.  Limited spaces for January starts are available for children turning three years in January or February.  Toilet training is a major learning process, and children will progress at their own natural pace. For this reason, we do not exclude any child who has yet to master personal toileting.  Children must be able to manage fundamental toileting and pull-ups, and help is always there when needed.

Our afternoon class is for Junior Kindergarten and dedicated for Pre-K aged children only.  This Kindergarten prep class has had a long record of success with preparing children to be self-confident when they enter big school.  It is very popular with parents and returning families, and their friends.  This class fills very quickly.

All teaching staff are certified Montessori instructors, and fully licensed Early Childhood Educators.  Staff members are trained in and hold valid Community Childcare First Aid Certificates.  All staff are trained and certified in many diverse areas, with valuable years of teaching practice, developmental knowledge and practical parenting wisdom, from personal experience.  Teachers are required to upgrade their knowledge on a continual basis.  Our program is strengthened through the many individual talents of our staff and our regular volunteer workers. Yoga, nature studies, creative arts and interactive story telling are some of the projects and activities that occur on a regular basis.

All staff, volunteers and practicum students that visit, must pass a Criminal Record Check prior to joining our classroom.

Several options are available for our morning class (8:45am to 11:30am).  Introduction to preschool is offered two classes a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), or a three classes per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), and of course a full time program (Monday through Friday).

Our afternoon Kindergarten Prep class (12:30pm to 3pm) is offered for five afternoons a week (Monday to Friday), or four days a week (Monday to Thursday).  We also offer a small amount of three day selections (Mon-Wed-Fri or where days are available).

Our Montessori program is enhanced with the Early Childhood Education program, which is an integral part of the daily schedule.  Each class ends with  with Circle time, snack time and outdoor play.  Open Art, Creative Art, Music and Movement, Baking, Yoga and our own Cultural Studies are additional benefits to make this unique experience for young minds.

Many preschool programs do not start Gradual Entry for new students until mid-September.  Our classes all begin on the first Tuesday after the Labour Day holiday.  The first two weeks are of a shorter duration for students who are requiring Gradual Entry, while children who are ready to attend an entire class, will begin the first day.  We continue through the year following the SD39 (Vancouver school district) calendar until mid-June.  We close for all statutory holidays, SD39 district closure days, Winter Break and Spring Break each year.

We offer half day preschool classes only.  Full day classes (daycare) are not offered.

We do not offer any after school, Pro-D day, or summer programs at this time.  Please check back with us for any updates.

Our calendar with scheduled events and theme programming is given to each registered family at the beginning of the school year.

Classroom doors open at the designated start times and allow for a ten-minute arrival period. There is a 10-minute window for pick-ups at the end of class time.
